According to Carolyn Robbins on Chron.com, tightening the stomach is a long-term process that focuses on the whole body. Getting rid of belly fat requires a combination of cardiovascular exercise, strength training and healthy eating.
- Perform aerobic exercise
Aerobic exercise, including running, bicycling, swimming and jumping rope, burns calories and reduces body fat. Aerobic exercise can help tighten the stomach by getting rid of excess belly fat. Perform at least 150 minutes of aerobic activity per week for effective fat reduction.
- Build muscle through strength training
Strengthening and working out the whole body is important for a strong and toned core. Full-body strength training sessions include exercises that work the arms, legs, back, neck, gluteal and core muscles. Building muscle also increases metabolism, which helps burn more calories. Robbins recommends performing two full-body sessions each week to tone the stomach.
- Perform a core routine
Core exercises include planks, crunches, sit-ups, push-ups, bicycle crunches, trunk rotations and many more. Choose five to eight of these exercises to include in a core routine. Perform each exercise for 10 to 15 repetitions, and repeat the routine two to three times every other day.
- Eat a healthier diet
Healthily cut out calories by reducing food portions and avoiding junk food. Reducing daily calorie intake by 500 calories is effective for healthy weight loss and tightening the stomach.
