Holly Lucille of the American Association of Naturopathic Physicians states that the main causes of estrogen dominance, or the condition wherein the body produces too much estrogen and not enough progesterone, include overexposure to environmental xenoestrogens, use of synthetic estrogens, anovulation and digestion issues. An excess of any hormone in the body in relation to the body’s endocrine system often results in overall imbalance and health issues.Know More
Environmental xenoestrogen is an industrial compound included in consumer products like lotions and detergents, says Lucille. Birth control pills and hormone replacement therapy are synthetic estrogens that also cause estrogen dominance. Another reason is anovulation, which refers to the lack of ovulation during menstrual cycles. This typically occurs in women above 35 years old. The body also tends to produce excess estrogen due to digestion issues, which tax the estrogen-detoxification process in the liver. Stress, unresolved emotional issues, poor diet and unhealthy habits, such as smoking and alcohol use, also lead to estrogen dominance.
Lucille further explains that estrogen dominance affects women’s health in various ways. It has been linked to an increase in PMS symptoms, endometriosis and uterine fibroids. It also worsens symptoms such as allergies, fatigue and headaches. Studies also reveal that there is a connection between excess estrogen and some cancers.Learn more about Older Adults
