Full Answer

WebMD states that Levitra and Viagra are two of five drugs approved by the Food and Drug Administration to treat erectile dysfunction, which is the inability to achieve or sustain an erection during sexual intercourse. Possible causes of erectile dysfunction include chronic illnesses, certain medications, inadequate blood flow to the penis, tiredness and excessive alcohol consumption. Drugs such as Levitra and Viagra work to increase the flow of blood to the penis so that a man can achieve an erection when he is sexually stimulated.

WebMD notes that other drugs used to treat erectile dysfunction in addition to Levitra and Viagra include Cialis, Stendra and Staxyn. Cialis begins to take effect in about 15 minutes and can last up to 36 hours in some cases, making it the longest-lasting FDA-approved erectile dysfunction treatment. Stendra can start working in 15 minutes as well, but the effects last approximately six hours. Staxyn is the most distinctive of the five FDA-approved erectile dysfunction treatments as it comes in the form of a tablet that dissolves in the mouth instead of a standard pill. It contains the same active ingredient as Levitra but is not interchangeable with it.

According to WebMD, if one of these drugs doesn't work, another can be used instead. However, because these drugs work in similar ways, if one drug is ineffective, then it's unlikely that an erection will be achieved with any of the others.
