Q:

Where can you find a list of British colonies?

A:

One such list of British colonies, for 1924, can be found online at The British Empire. Links on the site lead to additional historical information about each of the colonies.

Another site providing a more up-to-date list of what are now known as British Overseas Territories is available at OnlineNames. The term "British Overseas Territories" was introduced in 2002. Prior to this, the title for a British colony was "British Dependent Territory" after 1981. Prior to the 1981 British Nationality Act, the countries were known as Crown colonies. As of 2014, there are 14 territories that remain under the jurisdiction of the United Kingdom.

How did the British Empire begin?

    A:

The beginnings of the British Empire can be traced back to the reign of Queen Elizabeth I and the continuing competition for markets and resources which existed between England and the continental countries of France, Spain and Holland. In 1578, Elizabeth I granted Humphrey Gilbert a patent for overseas exploration and discovery. Although he claimed the island of Newfoundland for England in 1583, it was his half-brother Walter Raleigh who established the first overseas colony for England, called Roanoke, in 1584 on the coast of modern-day North Carolina.
