Full Answer

The names on Tuskegee University's list include all pilot graduates who graduated from the Tuskegee Flight School. The list was taken from the book "Black Knights - The Story of the Tuskegee Airmen," which was written by Thomas Reilly and Lynn M. Holman.

Tuskegee University cautions that the list only includes the graduates from the flight school. It does not include the individuals who participated in the pilot training program or the Tuskegee support operations. Participants possessing documented proof of participation as Tuskegee airmen are known as DOTA, or Documented Original Tuskegee Airmen.

Although there were only 996 original airmen in the Tuskegee program, there were more than 10,000 African American men and women serving as support for the airmen during World War II. There were around 450 Tuskegee pilots serving in combat operations in the Mediterranean, North Africa and the European theater. Of those aviators, 66 died during combat and 33 became prisoners of war. Tuskegee airmen flew more than 700 bomber escort missions and 15,533 sorties. Tuskegee airmen won more than 850 medals during the conflict.
