Under the distinguished leadership of Emperor Menelik II, Ethiopia defeated the Italians in the Battle of Adwa on March 1, 1896. The political structure of Ethiopia contributed to their unified military response against the Italian Invasion. At the end of the battle, more than 7,000 Italian soldiers and approximately 4,000 to 5,000 Ethiopian soldiers were killed.
