Vasco da Gama is credited with opening a sea route from Europe to the East. He sailed again to India in 1502, this time meeting resistance from Muslim traders in the region. He completed a third trip to Indian in 1524 to serve as a Portuguese viceroy to assist in combating the corruption of the Portuguese government in the region. In December 1524 Vasco da Gama died in Calchin, India, of an illness. His body was returned to Portugal for burial.
