Nelson Mandela was the grandfather of 17 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren. Mandela's grandson, Mandla Mandela, was elected chief of the Mvezo tribal council in 2007. Mandela had no children with his third wife, Grace Machel, whom he married in 1998. Mandela remained wed to Machel until his death on Dec. 5, 2013.
