Q:

What does the Statue of Liberty Mean to America?

A:

The Statue of Liberty means many things to America including hope, friendship and opportunity. The statue was given to the United States by France in 1886.

Shortly after the Civil War ended, France decided to create a piece that not only celebrated the anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, but that represented the friendship between the two countries. Fredric Auguste Bartholdi designed the structure and construction began in 1875 with the help of Alexendre-Gustave Eiffel, the man who designed the famous Eiffel Tower. The internal structure of the statue was made using iron and steel while the exterior was created using hammered sheets of copper.

The statue was completed in 1875 and was shipped in pieces to Ellis Island, New York, where it was reassembled on the pedestal that Americans created. President Glover Cleveland revealed the statue to the public on October 28, 1876.

At that time, many viewed that statue as a symbol for liberty and freedom to the immigrants who were coming into America seeking democracy. Over time, the Statue of Liberty has evolved into an endearing symbol of U.S. freedom that continues to represent hope and opportunities that are given to its citizens, including both natural citizens and immigrants.
