Q:

Who were the parents of Mahatma Gandhi?

A:

Mahatma Ghandi's parents were Karamchand Uttamchand Gandhi and Putlibai Gandhi. Mahatma was born Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi on Oct. 2nd, 1869, in Porbander, which is located on the Kathiawar Peninsula in the west of India. He was his parents' fourth and final child.

His eldest sibling was his only sister, Raliatbehn, born in 1862. His two brothers were Laxmidas, born in 1863, and Karsandas, born in 1866. Karamchand, also known as Kaba, had been married three times previously and had a daughter with each of his first two wives. All three of his wives had died, and when Kaba met Putlibai, he was 40 years old, while Putlibai was only 13. Kaba and Putlibai, along with their six children, lived in a three-story house that had been in the Ghandi family since 1777.

Putlibai was a religious woman and took all of the children to the Vaishnava Hindu temple, which was located next to the house, every day. She also took her children with her when she helped look after the sick and lower castes. She loved to learn about world events and was a source of advice and knowledge for many women in the town.

Kaba was a court official in the town, and his duties involved advising the royal family of Porbander and hiring new government officials. Even though he was successful, Kaba never gained much wealth, and his income only managed to help pay household bills.
