According to Biography.com, Alberta Williams and Michael King's families were deeply rooted in rural Georgia. However, Martin's maternal grandfather eventually moved to Atlanta to take over the Ebenezer Baptist church. Coming from a sharecropping family, Michael married Alberta, and the couple moved to city life in Atlanta. After the death of his father-in-law, Martin's father became pastor at the Ebenezer church. Michael King, Sr. eventually took the name of the leader of the Protestant Reformation, Martin Luther, and his son would later do the same.
