"Liberty" magazine sponsored a contest in 1938 that called on composers to write the official song for the Army Air Corps (now known as the U.S. Air Force). Composers submitted 757 scores, and a committee of Air Force wives selected the composition by Robert Crawford. The song, now formally titled "The U.S. Air Force," but commonly known as "The Wild Blue Yonder," was sung by Crawford at its official introduction at the Cleveland Air Races on Sept. 2, 1939.
