To dye acrylic yarn, dissolve disperse dye in hot water, soak the yarn in the dye solution according to the manufacturer's instructions, rinse the yarn, wash it and let it dry. This overnight process requires a stove, a large stock pot, water, dispersal dye, mild liquid soap and a long wooden or metal stirring spoon.
- Prepare the dye solution
Fill a large stock pot with water, and set it on the stove over high heat. When the water is hot, add the dispersal dye according to the package directions. Stir the dye to help it dissolve.
- Add the yarn
Add the yarn to the hot dye solution. Simmer the dye for 30 minutes, stirring regularly, then turn off the heat. Steep the yarn in the cooling dye for the length of time recommended by the dye manufacturer. Stir the pot several times an hour.
- Rinse and wash the yarn
When the yarn reaches the desired shade, pour the dye solution down the drain. Pour warm water into the pot, and move the yarn around with the spoon to rinse it. Pour the water out, and wash the yarn with mild soap and water. This removes excess dye. Rinse out the soap, and let the yarn air dry overnight.
