Q:

What happened to the Sears Portrait Studio?

A:

As of April 2013, all Sears Portrait Studios in the United States were shut down due to financial problems. Photography studios at Walmart and Babies R' Us closed as well, and it is not known if any of these studios will reopen.

It is believed that the portrait studios closed due to financial hardship in the advent of the digital photography age. According to the Wall Street Journal, many parents realized they could achieve the same photography results at home with a digital camera. A large portion of the Sears and Walmart photography business was aimed toward children and family portraits. Sears Portrait Studios remain open in Canada.
