The Sony Playstation 2, otherwise known as the PS2, was released in the United States on Oct. 26, 2000. The gaming console originally carried an manufacturer's suggested retail price of $299 in the United States.
The PS2 was officially announced at a June press conference just ahead of the video games industry's national convention, known as E3. During the announcement, Sony said it expected to sell more than a million units on launch day. Games made playable on the PS2 carried an MSRP of $49 when they were brand new. The gaming console was the second of now four iterations of the Playstation released as of September, 2014.
