Q:

What are some home remedies for removing pet odors?

A:

Two ways to remove pet accident odors using common, household products are to clean the area with a vinegar solution or to scrub it with a mixture of baking soda, dishwashing detergent and hydrogen peroxide. Bear in mind, however, that though these techniques deodorize, they may not be enough to discourage future accidents. In fact, using strongly scented products may cause the animal to mark the area again.

To thoroughly clean and deodorize the site of a pet accident, all traces of waste must first be removed. If the accident is recent, or still wet, several changes of paper towels may be needed to absorb the urine. When the area is only slightly damp, a mixture of equal parts white vinegar and water should be liberally applied. If the stain is stubborn, or older, a scrub brush to work the vinegar into the fibers is recommended. The soiled area should be blotted with clean towels.

If necessary, the pet owner should apply generous handfuls of baking soda to the affected area, allowing it to mound slightly. Then, he should scrub in the baking soda with a solution of 1 teaspoon of regular dishwashing liquid in 4 ounces of 3 percent hydrogen peroxide. The area should be left to dry for an hour or two until the baking soda can be vacuumed up.
