Q:

How do you get odor out of clothes?

A:

Quick Answer

Vinegar and baking soda are great odor eliminators and typically eliminate smoke, mildew and body odors from clothing. However, if they don't work to rid the clothes of their odor, try adding borax, a stain-removal laundry additive or an odor eliminator to your washing. Over the course of just a few hours, you can easily remove unwanted smells and odors from your clothes.

Full Answer

  1. Soak the clothes in a vinegar or baking soda solution

Put the smelly clothes in a sink or bucket. Add 1 cup of white vinegar or baking soda, and fill the sink or bucket with water. Swish the clothes around to mix everything up. Allow the clothes to soak for at least an hour and preferably overnight. If you have a top-loading washing machine, you can perform this step inside the machine.

  2. Wash the clothes normally

Transfer the clothes to the washing machine if needed, and add laundry detergent. Then, use the machine washing according to manufacturer instructions. Hand-wash more delicate fabrics after soaking them overnight.

  3. Dry the clothes outdoors

If the weather is cooperative and you have a clothesline, hang the clothes outdoors to dry in the sun. If no clothesline is available, dry the clothes as normal.
