The clear coat on a car can be restored by using painters masking tape, 800 grit sandpaper, 1,000 grit sandpaper, 1,200 grit sandpaper, an aerosol can of clear coat paint and cotton towels. It is important when restoring a clear coat that the temperature is roughly 75 degrees Fahrenheit with low humidity and the car is not in direct sunlight.Know More
Begin by washing the car. Allow it to dry for one hour before applying painter's masking tape to the joints where each panel of the car meets. Cover the door handles, mirrors and key holes with tape as well to avoid spraying clear coat paint on them. Next, spray down the panel where the clear coat will be restored. While the panel is still wet, dunk a piece of 800 grit sandpaper in a bucket of water, and proceed to gently sand the panel with soft, even strokes. Do not sand all the way down to the primer. Stop sanding if color begins to appear on the sandpaper.
Once the entire panel has been worked over with the 800 grit sandpaper, take the 1,000 grit sandpaper and repeat the process. Make sure that the panel and the sandpaper are both wet. Next, repeat the process again with the 1,200 grit sandpaper. This will remove all of the old clear coat. Dry the panel with the cotton towels. Take the aerosol can of clear coat paint and proceed to spray the panel horizontally from one side of the panel to the other. Do not spray vertically. The layers of paint should overlap each other halfway. Let the clear coat sit for an hour to dry. Repeat the process with the rest of the car.Learn more about Cleaning
