  1. Gather materials

While drain cleaning products can be purchased, they are often costly and could even be damaging to pipes. Three household supplies, all found in the kitchen, can remove the debris and odor from shower drains. Bring baking soda and vinegar to the bathroom, and boil at least 2 cups of water. A screw driver, plastic bag, metal coat hanger and dry rag may be needed as well.

  2. Unscrew drain and remove debris

Use the screwdriver, if needed, to unscrew the drain and remove the cover. Some drains have a stopper that can be removed without tools. Scoop out any hair or debris from the drain, and place it in plastic bag for disposal. A metal coat hanger may be needed to reach down the pipe.

  3. Use baking soda and vinegar

Pour baking soda down the drain. As much as 1 cup may be needed to remove all residue and odors. Then, pour vinegar down the drain. The amount of vinegar needed will depend on the baking soda, but 1/2 to 2 cups of vinegar is a safe estimate. Let the chemical reaction between the two substances work for about 30 minutes. If desired, a dry cloth can be stuffed down the drain to keep the vinegar smell from permeating the room.

  4. Flush with boiling water

Remove the dry cloth, if used, and carefully pour boiling water down the drain to flush out the baking soda, the vinegar and any residue. The drain should run clear. The entire process may need to be repeated if smells persist or if debris is still found in the drain.
