Q:

What is mensuration in mathematics?

A:

Mensuration is a branch of mathematics that deals with the measurement of areas and volumes of various geometrical figures. Figures such as cubes, cuboids, cylinders, cones and spheres have volume and area. Mensuration deals with the development of formulas to measure their areas and volumes.

The area of a cube is obtained using the formula A = 4 x length squared. The volume of a cube is obtained using the formula V = length cubed.

The area of a cuboid is obtained using the formula A = 2 [lb + lh + bh] where l is the length, b is the breadth and h is the height of the cuboid. The volume of the cuboid is arrived at using the formula V = length x breadth x height.

The curved surface area of a right circular cylinder can be obtained using A = 2πrh where h is the height of the cylinder and r is the radius of the base of the cylinder. The total surface area of the cylinder is obtained using A = 2πr [h+r], and the volume is arrived at using V = πr2h.

A cone has a curved surface area called the lateral surface area. The volume of a cone is one-third the volume of a cylinder with the same height and radius of the base.

Area is expressed in square units, while volume is expressed in cubic units.

    What is spherical geometry?

    A:

Spherical geometry is the branch of mathematics that deals with figures placed on the surface of a sphere. It can also be defined as a three-dimensional view of more traditional planar geometry; although, there are numerous differences between the planar and spherical subsets of geometrical study. Some of the basic tenets of planar geometry don't carry over to spherical geometry because it deals with different mathematical concepts.

How do you draw a plane in geometry?

    A:

Plane geometry is the sub-category of geometry that deals with flat surfaces and the coordinates, lines and shapes on them. To draw a plane, use grid or graphing paper and a straight edge or measuring tool.

What is the infinite series sum?

    A:

The infinite series sum usually deals with geometric series. The sum of an infinite geometric series, denoted as "S", is t1 / (1 - r), where "t1" is the first term of the series and "r" is the common ratio between the numbers in the series.

What does intersection mean in math?

    A:

An intersection in mathematics usually refers to the point where two lines cross each other on a plot, but can also refer to shared numbers in data sets. It is possible for more than two lines to meet at an intersection, and it is also possible for a line to have more than one distinct intersection.
