As the result of animal cruelty, millions of animals suffer each year and many die as the result of horrible and excruciatingly painful injuries and illnesses. Full Answer

There are two main types of animal cruelty: passive and active. In active animal cruelty, the animal suffers physical abuse such as blunt-force trauma, choking, kicking and so forth. Passive cruelty is harder to define and includes all acts of neglect such as failure to seek medical care, underfeeding, unsanitary living conditions and lack of human interaction.

While most states prosecute those convicted of animal cruelty as felons, many states do little to help animal victims within their state. States such as Idaho, Mississippi, South Dakota and Alaska have no felony laws on the book for animal cruelty regardless of how severe the case.

Since animals cannot speak for themselves, most people agree that it is up to people, law enforcement and the ASPCA to ensure that animals are cared for properly in this country. To this end, thousands of animals are rescued and given a new chance at life each year.
