The 50 pence is a British coin that was issued beginning in 1969. The coin is minted of copper and nickel and is not circular, as it is a curved heptagon. There have been three different designs of this coin. The most recent design was created in 2008 by Matthew Dent. The coin displays Queen Elizabeth II on the front and the bottom apex of the Royal Shield on the reverse. As of 2010, there were roughly 845 million 50 pence coins in circulation.
