The more well to do Chinese would get much, much larger houses that had a courtyard and privacy walls. Even though ancient Chinese houses were made of mud brick, they were strong and supportive enough to put up a second floor on these structures. It was only the more financially secure that had the second stories and other interesting upgrades.
