The responding variable is a result variable that changed in direct response to some change the individual made in the experiment. It is also referred to as the dependent variable.

In an experiment to determine which fertilizer works best on a plant, the plant, soil and the application of fertilizer are the constant variables. The different fertilizers are the manipulated variables, and the size the plants grow to for each different fertilizer are the responding variables. The size of each plant will vary in direct response to which fertilizer was used on it. If part of the experiment includes changes to the soil composition as well as fertilizer changes, the soil would be a manipulated variable too. The responding variables are measured and recorded under the result portion of the experiment. Once recorded, they will either prove or disprove the hypotheses first listed for the experiment. It is possible to manipulate different variables to achieve the responding variable presented in a hypothesis in some experiments. If the hypothesis has no scientific basis, no amount of manipulation will render the hypothesized outcome. The main reason for scientific experiments is to find answers. The responding variable provides these answers, whether hypothesized or not.
