How Are Shells Formed?

Answer

The way that shells are formed is truly amazing. Mollusks, snails and other creatures that live in shells must have a larger shell to accommodate their growth spurts. To do this, they add small amounts of calcium and other mineral deposits at the edges of their shells to enlarge them a little at a time. Adding these small amounts creates the beautiful patterns we see. You can find more information here: http://www.scientificamerican.com/article.cfm?id=how-are-seashells-created
