Billie Holiday was discovered by Jazz enthusiast John Hammond. John introduced her to Benny Goodman, a well-known clarinet player with whom she formed a band. Her first recording, "Your Mother's Son-in Law," was released in 1933.

One of Billie Holiday's best known songs, "Strange Fruit," was written by Lewis Allen. Billie Holiday died in 1959 at the age of 44 from congestion of the lungs and congestive heart failure.
