The Third plague pandemic was stopped with medications. There is evidence that a drug resistant form has been found. Madagascar in 1995 had a drug resistant form of the bacterium that was documented. There have been 362 cases reported in the U.S. from 1944 to 1993. Almost all of the cases have been found in New Mexico, Colorado, California, and Arizona. The Black Plague has been stopped and reoccurred a number of times since it was first reported in the Plague of Justinian. This was in the 6th and 7th centuries.
