How Do Barrier Islands Form?

Answer

Barrier Islands are formed when the coastline has a gentle slope that is broad. There must also be rivers that empty nearby that bring the sand that forms the barrier island. Lastly, there must be waves, tides and currents that are strong enough to push the sand. Between the tides, currents and waves the strongest force to drive the sand needs to be the waves or the island will not form. Barrier Islands are constantly changing from the forces of waves and wind.
