How do scientists classify rocks?

Scientists classify rocks by observing and studying the texture and composition of the rock. Texture refers to looking at the size and shape of the mineral grains that make up the rock. Composition refers to the weight percentages of the minerals that make up the rock. There are three different classifications when used to identify rocks. These classifications are igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary. Scientists study many different types of rocks and classify them in one of the three categories.
