# How does posi traction work?

Positraction is General Motors' brand name for their limited-slip differential gear arrangement. Limited-slip differentials maintain the same torque to both driving wheels when the vehicle is driving in a straight line, but when one wheel starts to lose traction, for example when slipping on ice or mud, the limited-slip differential automatically increases the torque of the wheel that does have traction. This technology is useful in race cars but for normal, weather-related slippery conditions is generally not needed.

How a posi traction works depends on the type of posi traction you have. There is the Torque sensitive and the speed sensitive posi traction. You can find more information at en.wikipedia.org
Positraction or a limited slip differential is rather complex to explain but I will try to make it easy to understand. If you were cruising in a car and took a fast turn but both wheels turned with the same amount of torque then the one of the wheels would squeel and spin as the pressure lifts off it. With posi traction the differential adjusts the torque to each wheel putting more torque on one than the other lessing the chance for your tire spinning when making a sharp turn real fast. It limits the slippage of your wheels.
Posi-traction is in one axle of your vehicle. What happens is when you one wheel would slip maybe one ice the other wheel will take care of moving the vehicle forward or backward.

that means that you have power to both tires in the back. this is really important if one tire get stuck in lets say mud and one tire isnt. both tires will spin out independently http://wiki.answers.com/Q/What_is_posi_traction
Posi-traction automatically transfers some of the power from the slipping wheel to the other wheel. It helps with not getting stuck http://www.chacha.com/question/how-does-posi-tract...
Posi Traction Limited slip differentials use various mechanisms to allow normal differential action when going around turns. When a wheel slips, they allow more torque to be transferred http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=200707...
The PosiTraction process increases the coefficient of friction on a tile floor or porcelain bathtub by creating a microscopic tread pattern in the mineral surface. It is not a coating http://www.posi-traction.us/faqs.htm
