How Long Can You Live after Your Appendix Bursts?

You can actually live for several weeks after your appendix bursts because the body has a way of walling off the burst organ. This doesn't mean that you shouldn't have a burst appendix removed, but it does mean that you can take antibiotics to deal with the infection and inflammation for several weeks before surgical removal. This makes removal of the appendix easier for your doctor because it's difficult to work with an area that is infected; the infection may spread while the surgery itself is being done, involving the colon and the intestines.
