The volcano has a powerful eruption in 1790 that killed eighty people, most of whom were Hawaiian warriors and their family members. They died mostly from the gases and ash emitted from the volcano. Another explosion occurred in 1924, this time killing only one person. In 1972, an earthquake triggered within the Kilauea volcano caused a forty-eight foot tsunami which killed two people.
