Mums are also known as chrysanthemums, are colorful flowers in red, purple, burgundy, lavender, pink, or white. You can either plant them as perennials in the ground or as potted plants. Either way, they are relatively easy to grow. Mums need quite a bit of sunlight to grow properly, or full sun. The optimal amount per day for these blossoms to grow is eight hours, but will do okay in five hours if you don't have a spot that gets the full eight hours of sun per day. If you're choosing between a spot that gets full morning sun and one that gets full afternoon sun, choose the morning timeframe. Also make sure you keep them away from artificial light during the evening and night. Because mums are short-day plants, they need a long period of darkness in the night to flower the next day.
