Is a 10-minute mile good?

According to Tara Parker-Pope of The New York Times, a study by Southwestern Medical School shows that a 9-minute mile for 50-year-old a man and a 10.5-minute mile for a woman of the same age are signs of moderate fitness. However, other factors can determine levels of physical fitness.

Dr. Jarett D. Berry of Southwestern Medical School is quoted in The New York Times as saying someone's mile time in midlife is very strongly associated with the risk of that person getting heart disease in old age. However, Berry also notes that fitness varies with age and sex; mile-time estimates are not conclusive tests of someone's fitness level.
