Dengue fever, which is also known as breakbone fever, is a highly infectious disease. It is caused by the dengue virus and is most commonly seen in tropical regions such as Latin America and Southeast Asia. It is very rare in the United States. Dengue fever is transmitted by several different species of mosquitoes. There are 3 stages or phases of dengue fever. They are the febrile phase, the critical/plasma leak phase, and the convalescence or reabsorbing phase.
