What does a bad starter sound like?

Answer

A bad starter sounds hideous to be honest with you on the really bad end. It will let out a high pitched whine as it spins at a billion miles per hour and doesn't engage the flywheel. On the not so bad end it will simply click as it doesn't spin and only pops out to engage the flywheel. That sound is kind of what you hear when you try to start a car with a bad battery. Those are the sounds you'll hear when a starter goes bad.
