What Is the Difference between Solvent and Solute?


A solvent is a substance which dissolves a solute to make a solution while a solute is a substance which dissolves into a solvent. They both can be in gaseous, liquid or solid state. A solvent can have different types of solutes dissolved in it just like water can dissolve both sugar and salt.
