When does tax season start?

According to the IRS, the 2014 tax season for individuals began on Jan. 31, 2014. The original start date was Jan. 21st, 2014, but it was delayed by 10 days due to the government shutdown.

The delay was used to program and test tax processing systems and ensure applications and databases reflect current tax law. Approximately 10 percent of IRS operations were functioning during the government shutdown. While the IRS works year-round on improving its tax processing systems, the bulk of the work takes place during the start of fall. Even with the delay, the IRS is fully prepared to handle the estimated 150 million tax returns.
