The reason ice floats in liquid water is that ice is less dense than water. Water is a unique substance in that it actually weighs less in the solid form than it does as a liquid. Most substance contract as they cool. Water does this too up to a point. However, once water reaches 4 degrees Celsius, the water will stop contracting and start to expand. The reason for this is the triangular shape of the hydrogen bonds.
