Why is George Washington on the One Dollar Bill?

There is no real recorded reason why George Washington's painting by Gilbert Stuart was put on the one dollar bill in 1869 along with Christopher Columbus. You would have to assume that he was the first and the only President our country had and that would be a good reason to pick him.
