Will cephalexin treat chlamydia?

According to WebMD, the list of antibiotics that treat chlamydia effectively does not include cephalexin (Keflex); however, other antibiotics are effective. These include amoxicillin, azithromycin (Zithromax), doxycycline (Doryx, Vibramycin), erythromycin (E-base), levofloxacin (Levaquin) and oflaxacin (Floxin).

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), chlamydia is a common sexually transmitted disease that affects both women and men. However, the effects of chlamydia on a woman's reproductive system are more serious than they are for men. The infection prevents some women from becoming pregnant and may lead to fatal ectopic pregnancy (one that occurs outside of the womb). Furthermore, pregnant women sometimes pass the infection on to their babies during delivery causing eye infections or pneumonia in the child. Women who have chlamydia are more prone to deliver their babies early, as well.

To prevent the disease, the CDC recommends that sexually active men and women use latex condoms and dental dams properly every time they have sex. Being in a mutually monogamous relationship with someone who tested negative for STDs is also effective protection for some. Additionally, knowing the symptoms of chlamydia infection is important. Any abnormal discharge or burning during urination should be investigated by a healthcare professional as soon as possible. The CDC also recommends that women treated for chlamydia are tested again after three months.
