Cause of blood in dog stool?

Answer

There can be a number of things that can cause blood in your dog's stool. If the blood is a bright red, then it is coming from the lower part of the intestinal tract. This condition can be caused by trauma, a mass, or abscess around the anal glands, conditions such as constipation or colitis, an infection, parasites, or several other things. When the blood is tarry and dark-colored, it has originated in the upper part of the gastrointestinal tract. This may be because the dog has been bleeding from areas such as the esophagus or stomach or other areas where bleeding may have been swallowed. In any case, blood in the stool definitely warrants a visit to the veterinarian.
