Hypersexuality is a mental disorder. The exact underlying causes of hypersexuality are unknown in most cases; however, doctors have found cases where it seems to have a physiological basis.

A doctor will assess a patient to eliminate possible physiological causes before treating psychological ones. Hypersexuality is considered a potential diagnosis if a person exhibits at least four out of five criteria for 6 months or longer, according to sexualaddiction.org.
