CBC W Diff?

Answer

A complete blood count is a comprehensive test used to assess your health. It measures several components in the makeup of your blood including red blood cells, which are responsible for transporting oxygen throughout the body; white blood cells, which fight infection; hemoglobin, the oxygen transporting protein contained within red blood cells; hematocrit, the volume of red blood cells in the blood; and platelets, which aid blood clotting. Evaluating these features can help doctors diagnose a medical condition such as anemia, leukemia or infection. It also is used to monitor existing blood-related conditions such as polycythemia vera, a bone marrow disease, or thalassemia, which affects the red blood cells.

Normal ranges are a red blood cell count of 4.7 to 6.1 million cells/microliter for males or 4.2 to 5.4 million cells/microliter for females; a white blood cell count of 4,500 to 10,000 cells/microliter; a hematocrit percentage of 40.7% - 50.3% for males or 36.1% - 44.3% for females; and hemoglobin measurement of 13.8 - 17.2 gm/dL for males or 12.1 - 15.1 gm/dL for females.

If your results are out of range, consult your doctor. If there is an underlying medical condition, they can provide a proper diagnosis and prescribe the best course of treatment.
