What are the characteristics of the kingdom Plantae?

Answer

Organisms in the kingdom Plantae are referred to more generally as plants: these organisms are green in color, produce their own food through photosynthesis and have the ability to grow using cell division. Most members of the kingdom Plantae are small, but they nevertheless play large contributing roles to the growth and sustenance of their surrounding environments. Plants differ from animals and microorganisms in appearance as well as their physical, chemical and biological composition.

One key difference that separates Plantae from other kingdoms is that they are all uniform in color: that color is green. The shades of green that make up plants ranges from dark emerald and hunter green to bright neon and even light pastels but regardless of shade identifies members of this family. In addition to having green-colored pigmentation, plants are eukaryotic and contain chlorophyll, which is used to produce energy. At the cellular level, all plants have cell walls that are comprised of cellulose and surrounded by thick membranes. Plants are not mobile but nevertheless need food and energy to exist, which they produce using the process of photosynthesis. All plants contain organ systems and reproduce by sexual or asexual mechanisms and are equipped with self-defense mechanisms, such as spiny leaves and poisons, to defend against predators.
