Christmas card salutations range from the sentimental to the comedic. One of the most famous is the scripture describing the birth of Jesus Christ in the Bible's St. Luke 10. Dr. Seuss created a popular salutation in his book "How the Grinch Stole Christmas." Then there is Charles Dickens who coined many a salutation in his book "The Christmas Carol." An especially popular quote is "I will honor Christmas in my heart, and try to keep it all the year." Other Christmas salutations come from a large group of sources, from anonymous people to famous writers, like E.B. White and Laura Ingalls Wilder.

The very first Christmas salutation was "A Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to You" printed on the very first Christmas card in 1843 by Sir Henry Cole. Sir Henry Cole wanted to send Christmas greetings to his family and friends without having to write each one by hand. He hired John Calcott Horsley to make identical cards with the same picture and salutation to send out to everyone.
