Raja Ram Mohan Roy has been called the Father of Modern India and made many contributions to raise India to a more civilized level.  Thanks to his influence some of the traditional Hindu practices that occurred in India such as child marriage and forcing widows to burn themselves on the pyre of their deceased husband were questioned and in some areas eliminated.  He lived from 1772-1833.
