Demeter was one of the Greek goddesses and had wheat as a symbol. Other symbols for her included domestic animals such as cats and dogs, plants such as poppies and sunflowers, and gems such as pearls and emeralds. Demeter was the goddess of the harvest, hence the wheat symbol. She was also goddess over marriage, the sacred law, and life and death. In Greek mythology, her daughter Persephone was abducted by Hades and taken to the underworld.
