Did the Europeans Call the Islands between Australia and Asia the West Indies?


Columbus called the islands the Indies because he thought that he had finally reached Asia. When it was discovered that the islands were not Asia, they were renamed the West Indies by Spain to distinguish them from the Spice Islands in the Pacific Ocean.
