Functionalism, or functional psychology, is the discipline of psychology that considers mentality and behavior in terms of active adaptation to the person's environment. The founder of Functionalism is considered to be William James, an American philosopher and psychologist. In the United States, it arose in the late 19th century as an alternative to Structuralism. The difference between structuralism and functionalism is that structuralism emphasizing that elements of culture must be understood in terms of their relationship to a larger structure.
